Climate

A starting point gathered from growers' notes, not a measurement.

Colonizing

75–80 °F

FruitingFruiting conditionsThe switch from sealed, dark colonization to fresh air, light and high surface humidity that tells mycelium to make mushrooms.

72–75 °F, 92–95% RHRHRelative humidity: how much water vapour the air holds compared with the most it could hold at that temperature.

Fresh air (FAEFAEFresh air exchange: swapping the stale, carbon-dioxide-rich air in a container for room air.)

Light

Indirect 6500K 12/12 or a bright room.

Substrate and casing

Substrate

• Dung, Straw, Various grains
• PF TEK cake substrate as listed: all-natural brown rice flour, fine-grain vermiculite and water (1 cup BRF, 2 cups vermiculite + filter layers, 1 cup water per 5 jars)

CasingCasing layerA thin, water-holding top layer with no food in it, spread over colonized substrate to keep the fruiting surface evenly moist.

When to pick (veil breakveil breakThe moment the thin tissue joining the cap edge to the stem tears, exposing the gills; the usual harvest cue for cubensis.)

Common problems

Reported

• Slower/fussier than standard cubes.
• No jars lost to contamination in this grower's runs of this TEK to date; two uninoculated, unsterilized control jars showed bacterial substrate discoloration while no inoculated, sterilized jar did.
